Gen Z Chooses SHS With Purpose: Future‑Ready, Self‑Aware, and Intentional

January 17, 2026

As younger Filipinos enter Senior High School, Generation Z is turning SHS strand selection into a strategic decision, not a default path. A recent study of 3,813 Grade 11 students found that the college course they intend to take is strongly associated with their SHS track/strand choice, showing clear forward‑planning.

What drives their decision? The top factors cited: personal preference, interest, and anticipated job opportunities, above family or purely academic performance. This shows Gen Z values meaning, relevance, and alignment with their passions over tradition or external pressure.

Gen Z’s digital-native mindset also plays a role: with online access to information about future careers, emerging industries, and global trends, they’re more informed than previous generations.

Yet, the system doesn’t always keep up. A 2025 report by Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) highlights that many municipalities lack availability of preferred SHS strands, limiting choices for some students.

Still, Gen Z remains undeterred, they see SHS not just as a requirement, but as a launchpad: a chance to align education with ambition, to explore interests, and build the foundation for the career they envision.

For institutions like iACADEMY, this generation’s intentional approach to strand‑picking underscores the need for flexible, relevant, and future‑oriented SHS offerings that equip students for both tertiary education and real‑world careers.
