November 07, 2025

Arlie Sweet Sumagaysay and Richard Jeroui Salvador, mentees under iACADEMY’s iNDEGENIUS Project Lab, took home the Best Director Award for their debut feature film Tumandok at the 48th Gawad Urian last October 11, 2025. The film also dominated this year’s nominations, receiving a total of 11 citations, the most among all entries.

The Gawad Urian Awards, considered the most prestigious recognition in Philippine cinema, honors excellence in artistry, storytelling, and cultural impact. Tumandok stands as a testament to Sumagaysay and Salvador’s long-standing collaboration with the Ati community in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo, spotlighting the stories of indigenous peoples and their fight for ancestral lands.

Through Tumandok, the filmmakers amplify the voices of marginalized groups while championing the importance of authentic, community-driven storytelling. Their success reflects iACADEMY’s mission through the iNDEGENIUS Program, to nurture young, purpose-driven filmmakers who create films that inspire dialogue and social awareness.

This milestone celebrates not only Filipino creativity but also iACADEMY’s commitment to empowering storytellers who go Beyond Better in redefining Philippine cinema.
